For all those old fans of the old ’90s family comedy sensibilities are alive and kicking in this movie “THE SMURFS” (Animated). For those that remember the sweet cartoon of the time have now been introduced with new story line, timeless comedy and bundles of laughter. The impressive voice work done includes veterans like Jonathan Winters and Tom Kane (the voice of Yoda from the Star Wars series) as well as newer talents such as Anton Yelchin and pop singer Katy Perry inclusive with the talent of Hank Azaria as the evil wizard Gargamel obsessed with harvesting the Smurfs for their ‘essence’ in order to become even more powerful accompanied with Papa Smurf (voiced by Winters) and his band of Smurfs accidentally landing up in New York City while escaping from Gargamel,
The story is interesting with the magical Smurfs that are a race of small, magical blue creatures living in a fairytale land. Led by the kind and wise Papa Smurf, they live a happy life hidden in the forest. However, they are constantly harassed by the evil (and incompetent) wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael. He’s eager to capture the Smurfs and use them as a key ingredient in his magical potions. In the process of escaping from Gargamel, a small group of Smurfs find themselves transported through a magical portal into New York City. But as Gargamel and Azrael pursue them into the real world, the Smurfs find themselves lost in the big city. In order to get home, they’re going to need the help of the hapless humans whose lives they fall into.
An ideal movie that delivers plenty of cartoonish live action which is full of fun. The fantasy/reality blend results in an outstanding performance on the drama of human characters. As a result, the characters are loved by the public. It’s the biggest entertainment for the children that will enjoy seeing the Smurfs pop out of cereal bowls, fall-off balconies, and shoot out of NERF canons as they evade Gargamel throughout the film.
