President Barak Obama has appointed Gen Martin Dempsey as US top military officer. Martin Dempsey has commanded US troops in Iraq war and served at varous other important appointments.
Martin Dempsey is replacement of Gen Mike Mullen and he will be no chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff when Mike Mullen will retire on October 1st 2011.
Obama praised Martin Dempsey as one of the most respected and combat tested generals of US Army, in a ceremony at White House. This choice was made by Obama when he was proceeding to attend a ceremony in honor of US soldiers who gave their lives for this war.
This appointment has been announced in the era when there is a lot of pressure on US government to start de escalation of US troops from Afghanistan. This pressure has gained more momentum after killing of Osama bin Laden, the main culprit behind the incident of 9/11. According to several analysts and newspaper column writers after killing of this “villain” the requirement of stay of US forces in Afghanistan will be useless and a vulnerable target in hostile territory. Instead of exposing your troops to danger and get more US troops killed in Afghanistan, it is a better option to withdraw and implement US policies through Afghan government.
Martin Dampsey is presently doing as Army Chief of Staff and another appointment Admiral James Winnefeld, Commander of US Northern Command has also been nominated as vice chairman of Joint Chief of Staff.
