While presenting his case in front of Iraq inquiry committee, the former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair showed his deep and profound regrets over the loss of life that occurred in Iraq war. However the ex-PM was adamant that his decision to push the country (UK) into Iraq war was correct and he does not regret that decision.
Tony Blair is the sort of people who commit mistakes that have drastic impact on the country’s political and social life, and still they do not feel regretful. No wonders that he is the legacy of George W Bush, the worst ever President that the US had in her history. There is no denying the fact that both the great nations of the world, the US and UK, are passing through the most awful crisis, both financial and political. This gift of crisis was given to both the nations by their war-monger ex-leaders in the name of ‘war against terror’. With a total disregard to history and ground realities and void of political foresight, those leaders led their countries in a war that has no end and no tangible victory. Who would make them understand that today’s world is totally different from the one it was in 13th or 14th centuries? In today’s environment any military expedition will cost you much more than the benefit you expect. Today’s world is oriented towards winning the hearts and minds of people that is possible through economic development only. Their predecessors like Obama and David Cameron will have to struggle a long way in order to recover their countries from the mess they are in at present.
The strange thing is that Mr. Tony still has the guts to harp upon the same old tune by saying that the West should not be apologetic on the decisions taken to go to war. He is still oblivious of the world situation when he says that he does not think that an attack on Iraq has made Iran much stronger than before. He also displays a sheer lack of political and strategic foresight when he recommends a similar action against Iran.
While talking about ‘ a looming and coming challenge’ from Iran he said, “:I am out in that region the whole time. I see the impact and influence of Iran everywhere. It is negative, destabilizing and it is supportive of terrorist groups”. In my opinion Tony Blair need to update his perception. Ironically he is on a peace mission to Middle East. If that remains his line of thinking he is going to end up achieving nothing. Iran is now a potent power in the region to reckon with, hence it will create definite impact and influence there. How is it negative and destabilizing is not understood. If Mr. Tony is referring to the support Hamas and Hezbollah are getting from Iran, then Tony is rather misguided. Both these organizations are struggling to get the rights of Palestinians who are perpetually being victimized by Israel. What else can the oppressed people do? They will knock at every possible door to get the help. So the key to a successful peace solution lies with Israel and not any one else.
Mr. Tony Blair also added, “Iran is doing everything to impede the peace process in the Middle East. And this is not because we have done something. At some point – and I say this to you with all the passion I possibly can – the West has got to get out of what I think is this wretched policy, or posture, of apology for believing that we are causing what the Iranians are doing, or what these extremists are doing. The fact is we are not. The fact is they are doing it because they disagree fundamentally with our way of life and they will carry on doing it unless they are met with the requisite determination and, if necessary, force”.
What a confusing statement! According to Tony Blair the West has done nothing wrong so far. The fact finding commission should batter visit thousands of families in Iraq who have lost their near and dear ones with fault at all. The killed and the maimed ones did not have any relationship with the terrorists or even with Saddam Hussein. So the violence will breed violence. Unless you stop spraying bullets, never expect that others would spray flowers on you. The other point that Iran does not like the western way of life hence they are hostile. This is conceptually wrong. If you do whatever you want but remaining within your geographical boundaries, no one will object to it. This has never happen in history that people reach out to other countries to change their lifestyle. The problem starts when you expand beyond your borders and transgress the rights of others and thus invite trouble.
The people like Tony Blair and George W Bush have played enough havoc with the lives of many innocents, including many of their own countrymen. It is now time for the enlightened and peace-loving nations of America and Britain to get rid of such nasty legacies of the past and work for a lasting and sustainable peace in the world.
