Albania has a lot of influence of Turkish culture because the Ottoman Rule between 1468 and 1912. About 70 % of population is Muslim. The Turkish cap and the cloth belt can still be seen in rural areas. Women can be seen blouses and shabby trousers. The blouse sleeves of women differ in south and north of the country. Women usually keep their heads covered with a kerchief. Even in cities the dress code of the people remains rather modest.
Albanians prefer lamb over beef or pork, as a most common meat. They also like a dish of eggs, vegetables and butter. The diet has bread as a staple food. A transparent brandy is made from the grapes. Albania has the highest literacy rates in the Balkans with about 88 % of people who can read and write. Albanian people like music. Many musical groups are seen playing different instruments in the towns. The traditional instruments are the civility, the gërnetë, the gajda, the sharkia and lahuta.
Albania’s favorite sport is soccer (football). Volleyball is the second most popular game, in which the local teams have emerged as champions in the surrounding countries. Apart, basketball and tennis are also liked. Chess is a popular indoor game.
Albanian people like small families comprising about two children. They opine that the wife should do the household job and not the husband. Parents when aged reside with the sons or daughters. Elders are respected. The eldest son is groomed to take the place of his father after his death.
People enjoy afternoon walk and a late night dinner with associates. Albanians are traditional storytellers. Popular tales contain humor and bravery. The night dancing clubs are popular among young people.
