The culture lovers in Nigeria were pleased to know that the annual cultural festival 2010 under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was being arranged. The important components of the show were local dances and dramas which were a continuation of such efforts over the past 26 years. The native people and communities were represented by their rich cultural heritage. In order to make the display a presentable one the participants had to carry out extensive practice of dances and other events.
The festival opened at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja where the dances from different provinces were in process. An impressive march past was arranged from 13 provinces. They had won the competition at zonal level to reach this stage. The Nigerian Minister of Tourism and Culture was present at the occasion who said that NYSC is playing vital role in achieving the cultural unity in the country. This program can be a useful exercise in creating awareness in Nigerian society for their contribution in the national development.
It was a remarkable event where a large number of participants performed dances pertaining to communities other than their own. The issues raised in the dramas were also pertinent to the problems being faced by the country and will help a lot to resolve them. The corps members were praised by the management for their enthusiasm that was visible by the team spirit. These skills will also help them enhance their careers in this field. NYSC provides excellent platform for promotion of such activities. The participants promised to continue putting in their best to promote Nigerian culture. At the end cash prizes and trophies were distributed among the participants. Niger State obtained first position in dance whereas Osun State clinched the top position in the drama competition.
