When this universe and the life therein were created, it was intended by the nature that the resources of the universe should remain available to all the creatures free of cost and irrespective of caste, color and creed. Rather the resources were created FIRST and their consumers LATER. The oxygen, the water and all other facilities needed to support the life already existed when the first living object appeared on this planet. All the animals had free access to the food within their own sphere and zone of influence. The same was applicable to the humans. Till the time man lived in caves and jungles, he would live off the land, hunting and eating whatever grew on the land. There was no division of resources and no boundaries drawn on the land.
Then came a time when the strong started subjugating the weak nations and converting them in to slaves. These slaves would then work for them as laborers. Like the bread the human labor was also not a problem of the culture at that time. So there was no question of worrying and thinking about economic values in those days. As the laborers and craftsmen were usually the slaves, so these professions were looked down upon. However the people engaged with agriculture used to enjoy a better status. The class division in old Greeks and the discrimination on the basis of caste, ie the Brahmans being the highest class and ‘Shudras’ (the untouchables) being the lowest one, in Hindus actually have their roots in the above mentioned historical evolution.
The force of history has given birth to many economic and political theories, defining the relationship between the people and the state. This is not the occasion to discuss all that. The fact remains that the man is still tackling the problem of the so called ‘Social Contract’ between the people and the state. In short any system that is based on social justice and safeguards the basic human rights can be considered acceptable. I consider that social justice is an
all-encompassing term. It denotes an easy and uninterrupted access of every human being to the opportunities of earning livelihood, competing for any position political, economic or administrative, and acquiring of education. It also stands for equality of everyone before the law, irrespective of the social status of a person. The access to social justice should be free of cost. It is possible only if the rule of repression and coercion is done away with and the rule of the people in true sense is ensured.
The scope of social justice is not confined to the boundaries of a country. It expands to cover the international horizon. Social justice applies to right of liberty, freedom of every nation, big or small. It establishes the right of self determination of people across the globe. The freedom of every country to practice any religion or culture without the oppression from outside also accounts for the social justice. Similarly the exploitative tactics of powerful nations and the international financial institutions are also a major obstacle in the way of achieving social justice at global level. When the trade and monetary policies are devised to suit the objectives of big powers, it amounts to social injustice to the poor and under developed countries.
Let us hope that a time will come when the global powers would realize how important the social justice is for the global peace.
